Dr. Sara Winifred Brown was born in 1868 in Winchester, Virginia. One of eight children, she and five siblings became physicians or pharmacists. Sarah graduated from Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute with honors and taught English in Washington, D.C. Dr. Brown was later the first African American to graduate from Cornell University with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1897. She then enrolled at Howard University, received her medical degree in 1904, and became a lecturer of gynecology in 1908. In 1924, Dr. Brown became the first female graduate of Howard to be elected to its Board of Trustees. She kept a summer home in Frederick County, and today, the property is known as “The Farm at Buck Hill.”
