The beginning of every school year, during segregation, mothers could take their children to Bennie’s Shoe Store for new shoes. Most clothing stores in Staunton, during those days, didn’t allow black people to try on clothing. Bennie’s Shoe Store was black-owned business that was accessible to the black community in Staunton. Bennie Sragovitz, was the store manger and Winfred Arthur Lang worked as a shoe repairman.
