Public schools were racially segregated in the American South, and black schools were more often than not underfunded. The Rosenwald Fund was founded by Julius Rosenwald, Booker T. Washington, and the Tuskegee Institute to assist in funding and building schoolhouses in the rural south. Between the 1910s and 1930s, over 5,300 schools, teacher’s homes, and other vocational buildings in fifteen southern states. The building that housed the Rosenwald School in McGaheysville was torn down to expand Route 33.The cost of the McGaheysville school was $1800 and funding came from the community and the Rosenwald Fund.
