Vassar Terry, deacon of the Shiloh Baptist Church, built the two-story dwelling. During World War II, Tarry’s Hotel served as a "weekend retreat” for African American servicemen. In 1915, the hotel was marketed as a hotel for African American travelers. It is assumed that Tarry’s Hotel may have been listed in The Negro Travelers’ Green Book at some point during its operation.
