The original location of the First Baptist Church was on the west corner of North Mason Street and East Wolfe Street. This area was known as “Old Mason Drive.” The congregation was organized in 1871 under the leadership of Rev. William Hill. In 1873, the church was erected and cost $850. In five years, the congregation outgrew the building. The old church was moved fifty feet back, and a new structure was built its place. The old church served as a lecture room and social hall. Later, a parsonage was added to the property to house ministers and their families. In 1963, under the pastorate of Rev. Thomas Cray Allen, the city of Harrisonburg purchased the church in part of the Urban Renewal Program. The church was demolished, as were other properties in the surrounding area. The church relocated to Broad Street (Site 16), and the previous church lot is now a parking lot.
