The Mannheim Plantation was constructed in 1788 by German settlers in Rockingham County. Michael Kauffman and his son David built the sizeable two-story stone house on a 360-acre plantation. Its name stems from the city of the same name the family is from in Germany. The 1850 United States Census shows Dewitt Coffman, grandson of David, held 13 enslaved people on the property. Other family members in the residence may have enslaved people, too. Sources indicate slave trading occurs at this estate. Across the road are the remains of two rare brick ‘duplex’ slave dwellings The Coffmans were ex-communicated from the Mennonite Church for enslavement and selling of enslaved people. The property today is new privately owned and occupied.
