Bethany Veney was born into slavery around 1813 in Luray, Virginia. In 1889, Veney published an autobiography, Aunt Betty’s Story: The Narrative of Bethany Veney, a Slave Woman, which tells the story of her life as an enslaved and free woman. This site has an interpretive marker, bench, and remembrance garden to honor Bethany Veney and her legacy.

The Shenandoah Valley Black Heritage Project held a program in Luray, Virginia in 2022, where the descendants of Bethany Veney gathered to read aloud her narrative.
