The historic Cabell Log House was built in 1869 by Edmund Cabell, a newly freed enslaved man who purchased the land in 1866 for $50. The original house was spared and remains intact with the addition of a kitchen wing and a bath in the early 20th century. The house remained in the same family for over 100 years, even after experiencing a fire in 1920. His descendants owned the home for over a century, and it is the only remaining 19th-century exposed-log structure in Staunton. The granddaughter of Edmund Cabell, Mrs. Emma Cabell Smith, lived here until 1987.
