- The Johnson Street Community Center is across the street on the left at the intersection of Board St and E. Johnson St
Thomas Mason rented this building on Johnson Street, which provided a safe place for Black residents to gather and socialize within the Newtown community. What was referred to as the Community Center or “rec center” had pool tables and a jukebox. This site closed sometime after Lucy F. Simms School opened as the new school was the latest gathering spot for the community.
