From the great research from Susie Brent-king of the Staunton -Augusta County African American Research Society, the history of black insurance companies in the area is documented. The Richmond Beneficial Company was one locally black-owned insurance company branch in Staunton. Clarence Givens operated the business. Charles Lewis and Allen Howard worked serval years at the company as agents. Givens ran operations out of his own home from 1931 to 1961. The company was successful and even owned its airplane for business trips. The company extended its offices on the East Coast in areas including Ohio and Florida. The Richmond Beneficial Company merged with the Universal Life of Memphis, Tennessee in 1965.
