Jedaiah Hotchkiss documented Mount Sydney Schoolhouse No. 27 in the 1885 Atlas of Augusta County. The school was for black children in the Mount Sydney Area and operated from 1872 to 1931. The Freedman Bureau established the first black school in Mount Sydney in 1867, although the location is unclear. In 1872, a new school building was dedicated for black students and joined the county's 33 schoolhouses for black children. News Leader journalist Dale Brumfield reported that the schoolteacher in 1909, Marie Coleman, taught 18 students, and the building was in poor condition. In 1912, schoolteacher Mary Butler taught 27 students. Geneva Harden taught 15 students in 1930-31, and the schoolhouse conditions had not improved. The school closed in 1931 due to low enrollment. The building was purchased in 1935 and converted into a private home as it remains today.
