The Greenville Cemetery is also known as the Mount Ead Cemetery and the Greenville Black (Negro) Cemetery. The cemetery is next to the former site of the Mt. Ead Baptist Church. Isaac Newton gave the land for the cemetery to members of both the Mt. Ead and Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Churches. Mt. Ead Baptist Church held services from about 1872 until about 1976. Many of the church members have moved away from the area. The church was torn down in December 1992. Wayman Chapel was built in 1876-77 and was moved from its original location to across the road on Route 11 in 1936. After 1945, the church was seldom used, and its members joined the Mt. Ead Baptist Church. While both churches are no longer in service, many Black people with family ties to former members continue to be buried in this cemetery. It remains in use and is owned and operated by the Greenville Cemetery Association.
