James Montgomery Morris was the first African American lawyer in Staunton. Morris was born on June 5, 1867 in Louisa County, Virginia. He attended Storer College and Howard University. He earned a degree from the Howard School of Law in 1894. Morris moved to Staunton as an educator and opened his own law practice. Morris practiced his profession for 56 years.
