Dr. John Chiles was born on September 25, 1896 in Staunton. He graduated from the Langston-Douglas Academy and attended the Virginia State College. He studied dentistry at Howard University and Forsythe Dental School. Dr. Chiles opened is own private practice in 1925 on East Frederick Street. Dr. Chiles was loyal member of the August Street United Methodist Church for 56 years and served on the Fairview Cemetery Committee as president. He was active in his community and helped organized the African American baseball team at Montgomery Hall Park and was a member of the Booker T. Washington High School Athletic Advisory Board. Dr. Chiles held positions on the Blue Ridge Community College board, the Staunton City School Board, the Staunton Inter-Racial Committee, and Staunton Special Housing Committee.
