Old Chapel was built c. 1790 and replaced an earlier log structure. The “Burwell Cemetery” lies to the south of the building and includes the graves of some of Clarke County’s earliest residents. Most notable, however, are the ten graves known to be of enslaved and formerly enslaved individuals. Recent studies have unearthed what could be dozens more.
Nathaniel Carter, formerly enslaved at Carter Hall and later sexton of the church, is buried here.
Lots 83-89 are marked as the "colored servants section." Although the language is antiquated, this is where many enslaved people were buried.
