The Staunton Tribune was an African American weekly newspaper that began in 1891 and bore the paper's motto, "Justice To All." Willis McGlascoe Carter worked as the editor from 1895 to 1931. Carter was a born into slavery in 1952. He was a self-educated and became an educator and principal in Augusta County’s segregated public schools and helped create the Negro Industrial and Educational Association of Virginia. Other staff members were David Carter, secretary, and James Anderson, manager. A surviving copy of a September 1, 1894 eight-page newspaper from Staunton Tribune was passed through three generations of the Johnson family. This piece of history has been restored and is available for viewing in person or online at the Library of Virginia under “The Willis M. Carter” collection.
