Intersection of Bishop Meade Road (Rt 255) and Browntown Road (Rt 620)
|
Directions from Little Chapel (Claytonville) to site 13:
Browntown appears to have been named for William Brown, an African American who began buying land along what was then the Millwood-Berryville Turnpike in the 1870s. In 1872 he purchased one acre of land and later increased his holdings to 20 ⅓ acres in 1878. Brown’s house still stands on the east side of Bishop Meade Road, along with several other dwellings on Bishop Meade and Browntown roads.
