Intersection of Bishop Meade Road (Rt 255) and Browntown Road (Rt 620)

Directions from Little Chapel (Claytonville) to site 13:
  • Continue south on VA-255 for approximately 1 mile. The collection of dwellings around the intersection of VA-255 (Bishop Meade Road) and Browntown Road are all private, and pulling off to the side of the road is not advised. 
  • Drive a quarter mile past the house and park near the cemetery sign. Walk up the hill to the fenced cemetery under big tree. 
Browntown appears to have been named for William Brown, an African American who began buying land along what was then the Millwood-Berryville Turnpike in the 1870s. In 1872 he purchased one acre of land and later increased his holdings to 20 ⅓ acres in 1878. Brown’s house still stands on the east side of Bishop Meade Road, along with several other dwellings on Bishop Meade and Browntown roads. ​
