In the 1880s, the African American community of Waynesboro had land donated by Joshua and Nancy Hill to a group of trustees for use “as a colored cemetery for the burial of colored persons.” The cemetery became Fairview Cemetery and is still in use today. The city owns the cemetery, which has been shared by local churches, the Port Republic Road neighborhood, and African Americans in the area. There is an estimate of over 500 marked and unmarked burials.
