As it stands today, Greenwood Cemetery is a combination of two separate cemeteries. This cemetery used to be separated by a fence between the original Greenwood Cemetery and the Ames Methodist Church Cemetery, a historically African American church and cemetery. The wall was removed in the late 1900s. J. Robert Swank’s 1967 survey of the then two cemeteries noted that many graves were unmarked, and many had markers in the wrong spots. In a 2003 survey, the Ames Negro Methodist Church Cemetery burials that are now part of Greenwood Cemetery were identified and recorded.
