312 Port Republic Road
Waynesboro, Virginia 22980
The Pleasant View United Methodist Church was the first construction in the African American neighborhood of Port Republic Road. The church was organized in 1867 by a group of individuals in an old schoolhouse. Pleasant View’s first church building was erected in 1870 on the same site as the present-day church. In 1876, Joshua Hill, a former slave, purchased 10 acres from John N. Crouse. Hill donated the property to the church, which he was also a member of. The original church building was relocated to serve as a schoolhouse in 1880. A new church building was erected in 1880 under Rev. John Reed. The 157-year-old Pleasant View church is still active today.
