Emmet Arthur Dougans Memorial Bridge honors the life of Vietnam War veteran Army Specialist Emmet Arthur Dougans. Dougans was an African American soldier from Page County, Virginia, who was killed in action in Vietnam on July 9, 1966, at the age of 22. Dougans enlisted for active duty at 17 in 1960. Dougans earned two Purple Hearts and the Good Conduct Medal. Dougans was cited on April 30, 1966 for bravery by the Secretary of the Army. In addition to serving with the 2nd Infantry Division, he served with the 173rd Airborne Division and the 16th Ranger Battalion in Vietnam. Dougans was buried with full military honors on July 21, 1966. During interment in the Odd Fellows Cemetery (Hillside Cemetery), an Army contingent fired a volley over Dougans’ flag-draped casket. More than 600 people attended Dougans funeral. The bridge on Route 675, Bixler’s Ferry Road, over Route 11 was named in honor Emmet Arthur Dougans in 2020.
