This Courthouse, erected in 1839 shortly after the creation of Clarke County in 1836, was, and remains, the site of many historic legal transactions within the county. Within this building, White and African American residents bought and sold land, filed vital paperwork, and faced the consequences of their actions. Numerous “slave sales” and auctions occurred outside the front door of the courthouse during the long history before emancipation in 1865. This courthouse is also the site of the 1860 trial of Jerry, an enslaved man accused of inciting rebellion in the days after John Brown’s Raid on Harper’s Ferry. Jerry was found guilty and transported out of state.
