Crawford’s Barbershop was owned by James ‘Scabie’ Crawford and employed Tina Morgan and Albert Timberlake. There were several black barbers in Staunton, including Bud Scott on Shelton Alley, Arthur Taylor, Frank Evans on Augusta Street, Billy Williams on Gooch Street, Wilbur Johnson on Green Street, and Josephine Williams on Greet Street. The barbershop was a common meeting place for customers.
Above Crawford’s Barbershop was the Ideal Beauty Salon with three beauticians: Barbara Jackson, Edith Clark, and Rosalie C. Vickers. The three women were members of the Staunton Cosmetology Club, organized in 1953 with the motto “We Strive to Please.” The club attended workshops for beauticians nationwide, held monthly meetings, and performed charitable work. It was affiliated with the Virginia State and National Beautician Association and contributed to the Virginia State Beauticians Home in Norfolk, Virginia. Among the first beauticians in Staunton were Virginia Cook, Roselyn Burks, Alice Jones, Margaret Parrish, Gertrude Cauls, Placid Evens, and Louis Smith. |
