The Valley Pike (Valley Turnpike), known today as part of Route 11, was a path thousands of enslaved individuals were forced to take to be sold in the Deep South during slavery. The trial began at John Armfield’s slave pen in Alexandria, Virginia, and traveled westward to Winchester, Virginia, then shifted southward through the Shenandoah Valley. Under the watchful eye of armed guards, the bounded captives were displaced and passed through the present cities and towns that intersect with the Valley Pike.
