Directions from Orrick Chapel to Site 7:
Once located at the intersection of Fairfax Pike and Double Church Road, it was a free community that took root before the Civil War. The Crossroads community persisted well into the late 19th century. The community was referred to as “Freetown” by the local white people. The community appears on the 1885 Lake’s Atlas and is mentioned by name in several land deeds. It lists several names of African American property owners, including the Barber, Lewis, Fletcher, Jenkins, Johnston, and Coleman. These families appear to have been free before the Civil War, and land deeds record their land purchase along what is now Double Church Road.
