Mt. Paran Church is a historic African American church founded in 1885. Little information is available on the initial church building, which sadly burned down. The church was built in 1924, and the cemetery is behind it on the left side of the road. From 1887 to 1921, the church shared the same lot as the East Elkton School, which was built for black children in the surrounding area. After the school closed, a considerable amount was donated to erect a larger Newtown (East Elkton) School. The church and school were in the former African American community of Newtown in Elkton.
