About Us
Shenandoah Valley Black Heritage Project (SVBHP) was established in 2013. Our mission is to learn, share, and illuminate the rich African American history and culture of the Shenandoah Valley. We are a charitable, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to recovering, sharing, centralizing, and expanding the resources on African American history of the Shenandoah Valley through online resources, special events, and our Shenandoah Valley Black Heritage Center. The team is a collection of local historians, writers, artists, teachers, descendants, interested residents, and neighborhood associations. Our center opened in 2018 and has a growing library, archive collection, and technological tools. We are dedicated to recovering and identifying burial grounds and exploring historical black sites, including schools, businesses, cemeteries, churches, homes, and neighborhoods.
