The Oak Grove Elementary School was built in 1959 to serve as a school for African American students in Augusta County, grades one through seven. The staff included principal and teacher Melvin E. Clarke and four more teachers. The school served as the only elementary school in the county. In 1966, the county school board integrated schools, twelve years after the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision striking down public school segregation. Oak Gove Elementary School was closed, and the building was to be used for special educational purposes.
