The Wilson and Fortune Cemetery or “Athens Cemetery” is a burial ground for enslaved and emancipated African Americans. Shenandoah Valley Black Heritage Project holds periodical clean-ups for the cemetery that is fenced and well maintained. A survey from 2007 lists seven marked graves with the last name Wilson or Fortune. The survey notes there are stones without markings in the cemetery. Further research needs to be done to identify the potential unmarked graves and documentation of the cemetery’s history. The cemetery is on private property and cannot be seen or accessed from the road.
