Ressie Jeffries became the principal of the District 1 Colored School at the corner of Pine and Laurel streets in 1926. Sometime during the late 1920s, that school burned to the ground, and a new school was erected on Criser Road.
Built in 1932, the “Front Royal Colored School,” also known as the Ressie Jeffries school, signaled major African American educational achievements in Warren County. Its opening caused the closure of many of the existing primary schools, consolidating the student body onto one campus. By 1942 it was the only African American primary school in the county and was later supplanted by Criser High School. |
