Senseney Avenue includes three historical African American sites. The first site is Middletown Mission Church. The log structure housed Mount Olive Baptist Church, Middletown’s first church that was built by a Methodist congregation in 1818. The church was used until 1852, when a new church was built. In 1872, the building was conveyed to the African American congregation in the area and became the Middletown Missionary Church.
The second site is the church built around 1800, Mount Zion Methodist Church. The church was transferred to the African American Methodist congregation in 1892. It replaced the earlier Middletown Mission Church structure when it had become too small to support the congregation. It was abandoned in 1985 and converted into a private residence in the 1990s.
This third site is the former Senseney-Middletown Colored School, an African American elementary school on Senseney Ave, operated from 1939 to 1960.
