This property was the home and business of Richard Pickering called Stage Inn. It is in what is now Mauzy along Route 11 in Rockingham County. Politicians, speechmakers, and a militia group visited the inn. The 700 acres of farmland have been divided up since then. A 1932 road map by J.W. Wayland shows several buildings that were slave cabins and are no longer standing. According to local historian William A. Good, “There are two known slave burial sites on this farm.” One burial site is marked on the bottom left corner of the Wayland map. The second burial site is up a hill behind the Pickering home. The black and white photo of the Pickering home and Stage Inn is what it would have looked like in the early 1900s. The building was torn down in 2022.
