This parking lot is the former site of the Colonnade “amusement center” and “dance hall.” The Colonnade was a multi-purpose building from the early 1900s until the 1970s. The property was used as a meeting and events space for the Newtown community. The second-floor meeting room of the Washington-Newman American Legion No. 76 was held here after the Pythian building was torn down. The Colonnade housed a restaurant, poolroom, and barbershop. Harrisonburg’s Colored School, also known as Effinger Street School (Site 13), used the Colonnade’s gymnasium for basketball games and dances. Other programs held at the Colonnade over the years included orchestras, carnivals, boxing matches, and dance contests.
