Thornrose Cemetery was founded in 1849 on 12 acres west of downtown Staunton. The cemetery was formally dedicated on May 28, 1853, and received its first burial a day later. At the cemetery, rest the remains of individuals who were buried at a time when segregation prevented African Americans being interred in other parts of the cemetery. The grounds feature winding roads, unique architectural features, and century-old trees. Learn more by visiting thornrose.org.
