Intersection of Lambert and Augusta Streets, Staunton, Virginia 24401; 38.16400 N, 79.06589 W
In 1869, former enslaved members of Augusta Street United Methodist and Mt. Zion Baptist churches purchased six acres of Simpson Taylor’s 700-acre “Selma” estate. Taylor’s devoted former slave, Anderson, may have influenced the sale. The Fair View historic African American cemetery is still owned by the two churches and is on the same property that was shown on the original survey.
