The St. Johns Baptist Church is located in the former small African American community of Salem. The structure was built in 1882 and is the possible site of Colored School #7. Salem was founded by six families: Broaddus, Bundy, Cyrus, Johnson, Tyree, and Veney. The area was inhabited around 1804 and still is today. Each family had various jobs, such as producing materials for buildings such as lime and rayon, skilled carpenters, furnace workers, and farmers. They also owned their own land and buried their dead in family cemeteries.
